Opinion: Cardinal Asks Rahm, "Would Jesus Be Accepted As A Chicagoan?"

" Cardinal Francis George is taking Mayor Rahm Emanuel to task for saying that opposition to gay marriage is not a “Chicago value.” The archbishop asks the mayor, “Could Jesus be accepted as a Chicagoan?” and accuses him of trying to make gay marriage “the official state religion.”

     Your Ward Room Blogger belongs to a Mainline Protestant church led by a gay pastor who lives in a committed relationship with a partner. Everyone in the congregation knows, but no one has an issue with it, or even talks about it. Living and worshipping in an inner city neighborhood, you learn to accept whoever walks into the sanctuary. So I disagree with Cardinal George -- and Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy -- that Christianity is synonymous with opposition to gay marriage. But the cardinal has spent a lot more time reading the Bible and studying theology than I have, so I respect what he has to say. Here is his statement, from the Catholic Chicago Blog: "
